Amazon may be preparing to release a new smartphone in the second half of 2014, reports the Wall Streat Journal citing people briefed on the company’s plans as it sources.Amazon plans to star mass production in May with an initial order of 600,000 units. The company has chosen Japan Display as one of its display manufacturers, which is know for producing the screen for the iPhone 5s and 5c.
According to the report, Amazon has bee showcasing the phone to developers in San Francisco and at its Seattle headquarters. The company plans to announce the handset in June, with a target launch date in September.
Instead of a run-of-the-mill offering, Amazon plans to introduce a 3D screen that displays multi-dimensional images without the need for special glasses. The phone would also include retina-tracking technology in its front camera and technology to produce 3D images on the screen that would lend itself to gaming.
Amazon has been showcasing the phone to developers at secret meetings with security guards. Details on the operating system that powers the phone is not known, but it likely will be a version of Android similar to what powers the Kindle Fire.
